Ultimately, this multi-faceted and sophisticated tale about art, wisdom and life itself may find its most appreciative audience with adults. ![]() Rendered in rich, earthy tones, Baskin's bold, expressionist watercolors function primarily as vigorous character studies, though they do little to advance the story. Juster's elegant command of language is immediately evident-"More than many years ago when fewer things had happened in the world and there was less to know, there lived a young man named Alberic who knew nothing at all." Though the story is overlong for a picture book market, the author's compelling prose, elevated without being lofty, will draw in advanced readers. After many years, when he enraptures others with stories of his own experiences, he is given the name Alberic the Wise. He apprentices first with one tradesman, then another, excelling at nothing. The boy is so taken by a stranger's exotic descriptions of the great world beyond that he embarks on a journey of his own. This story was an example for me, and while Alberic failed many times, he persevered and became a better man because of it. ![]() He then discovers that he has learned much through his misfortunes and goes to tell the world about it. The author of The Phantom Tollbooth spins a classically structured yarn about a simple, wisdom-seeking country youth of no particular talents. Alberic ventures into the world and takes many jobs, but he fails in every attempt at becoming skilled in each profession. ![]()

The secret lives of treesĭespite being a fiction book, parts of The Overstory are inspired from reality. The only not-positive thing I noticed is that, at times, the story tends to feel a bit too long and a bit too didactic. The part I enjoyed most was Roots – the collection of short stories through which all main characters are introduced to the reader. The main sections of the book mirror the parts of a tree (Roots, Trunk, Crown, and Seeds). Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction Winner of the William Dean Howells.
